I just eavesdropped on a conversation that blew me away.

Now, don't get me wrong.  I wasn't wiretapping or doing anything illegal.  I was just getting a cup of coffee.  Yet … .

The implications of what I overheard will have a staggering effect on your business

Here's how it happened:

I was at a seminar over the weekend.  On a short break, I scramble out of the conference room to grab a quick cup of coffee.  While I was "doctoring" my coffee (yes, I still use cream and sugar), the guy in line right before me stands off to the side to take a couple of sips.  Seconds later, two others approach him excitedly.

One of them introduces the other to my coffee-drinking cohort.  "John, this is Steve, the search engine optimization guy I told you about, who's been doing such a great job for me on my site.  Steve, this is John, a friend of mine who owns a business similar to mine, up in New York."

Immediately, John jumps in and says to Steve, "Bill has told me about the results he's been getting, and I'm jealous!  I need to put you to work for me on my site.  Do you have a card?"

At that point, Steve, who has just been smiling and nodding, speaks for the first time and simply says "Sure, here's my card.  Can I go ahead and get yours?"  The two of them exchange cards.

I realized, at that point, that I had just witnessed something phenomenal

As the two men walked away, I just had to know something.  Curiosity was killing me.  So, I walk up to Steve and asked, "I couldn't help but overhear that conversation.  Sounds like you just made an easy sale!  I'm curious: What is a new client like that worth to you?"

Steve enthusiastically replied, "An average client's first project is usually around $3,000."

I had just witnessed a $3,000 transaction that took less than 10 seconds.

There is no easier way to make a sale...

This is the power of an enthusiastic referral.  Notice what was missing from this conversation:

The "deal was sealed" before these two strangers ever exchanged cards.  Why?  Because John trusts his friend Bill.  So, when Bill tells John that Steve has done a great job for him, that's all John needs to know.  Steve had the business without having to say a word.
