Have you ever thought that it would be fascinating — and beneficial to your understanding of the Bible — to visit the Holy Land?  Just think: It would give you such a feel for so many of the things we read about in the scriptures.

But what about the fragrances of the Bible?  After all, aroma has a powerful effect on us all, touching us profoundly in the very center of our brains, where memory and emotions are stored.  Wouldn't an aromatic journey through the Bible open up a whole new perspective of that time and people?

Aromatic oils in the Bible

After all, aromatic oils played a very important role in daily life during biblical times.  Everyone from kings and priests to lovers — even sheep — were anointed with aromatic oils.  For example:

  • Jesus said that, when His disciples fasted, they were to anoint themselves with oil, so as not to appear to be fasting (Matt 6:16-18).
  • The tabernacle, and all of its vessels, were anointed with oil before being put into service (Ex 40:9).
  • And, the Messiah (the Christ) means "the Anointed One."

And, of course, there are many, many other references to oils throughout the scriptures, in both the Old and New Testaments.

Aromatic oils: more precious than gold

The oils and aromatics mentioned in the Bible were more valuable than gold and silver.  Israel's king Hezekiah kept "the spices and the precious ointment" together with silver and gold in the royal treasure chamber (2 Kgs. 20:13).  And the spikenard used to anoint the feet of Jesus (John 12:5) was valued at a year's wages.

Though extra-biblical, one fact emphasizes the value of oils in the ancient world.  When the tomb of King Tutankhamen was opened by Howard Carter, a stunning collection of gold objects was discovered, untouched by grave robbers.  However, almost all of the aromatic oils buried with the king had been stolen.

With this in mind, you can deepen your appreciation and understanding of the setting of the Bible by becoming familiar with the aromatic oils that played such a great part in the lives of people at that time.

The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture™: 12 of the most important biblical oils in one aromatherapy set

Gary Young has gathered together the twelve most significant oils referred to in the Bible, so that you can savor and enjoy these precious oils — with their beautiful fragrances and intriguing histories — for yourself.

The Twelve Oils of Ancient Scripture™ aromatherapy set contains 12 single oils, in 5 ml bottles, along with an instructional audiocassette tape about these oils, in an attractive gift box.  The oils in this set include:

  • Aloes (cf. Psalm 45:8; John 19:39), which are believed to refer to sandalwood, one of the oldest incenses known to man, going back more than 4,000 years, and highly prized for its fragrance.
  • Cassia (cf. Ps. 45:8): one of the oldest known spices in the world.  It's a lot like cinnamon, but with a sweeter fragrance.  It is among the most antiseptic of the essential oils.  (Available from Young Living only as part of this set.)
  • Cedarwood (cf. Lev. 14:1-32; Num. 19): historically recognized for its calming and purifying properties.
  • Cypress (cf. Hosea 14:8): one the oils most used to support the circulatory system.
  • Frankincense (cf. Song of Sol. 3:6; Exodus 30:34; Rev 18:13): one of the three gifts given the Christ child (Matthew 2:11), a gift for kings and highly valued in the time of Christ for its many health-promoting properties.
  • Galbanum (cf. Ex. 30:34): used for its antiseptic and body-supporting properties.
  • Hyssop (cf. Ps. 51:7): purifying and supportive of the respiratory system.
  • Myrrh (cf. Prov. 7:17; Song of Sol. 1:13): one of the three gifts given to the Christ child (Matthew 2:11), a gift for kings, with purifying, restorative and revitalizing properties, and uplifting for the mind.
  • Myrtle (cf. Neh. 8:15): an oil with a soothing effect when inhaled.
  • Onycha (cf. Ex. 30:34): was traditionally known for its soothing and comforting properties.  (Available from Young Living only as part of this set.)
  • Rose of Sharon (cf. Song of Sol. 2:1) is believed to refer to Cistus, which is calming and uplifting, and helpful for meditation.
  • Spikenard (cf. Mk. 14:3): a relaxing and soothing oil, and used in burial of the dead.

So take your aromatic journey through the Bible.  It will give you betting insight into those times, and bring to you many other benefits — physically, mentally and emotionally.
