Angelica oil is referred to in Germany as the "oil of angels", perhaps because of its ability to calm anxiety, restore happy memories and bring peaceful sleep.  It may also support the immune system and digestion.

About angelica oil:

Angelica archangelica is native to Europe and Siberia, and is a member of the Apiaceae (umbelliferae) botanical family.

Angelica archangelica is a biennial plant.  Its roots are long, spindle-shaped, thick and fleshy.  It grows to between four to six feet in height, with hollow stems that are stout and fluted.  Its foliage is bold and pleasing, with leaves forming on long, stout, hollow footstocks, that are often three feet in length.

Angelica oil is steam distilled from the roots.

Historically, angelica oil was used to strengthen the heart, and generally stimulate the cirulatory and immune systems.

 

Companion oils: Orange, melissa and mandarin.

 

Chemical constituents:

  • Monoterpenes (73%): pinenes (25%), limonenes (13%).
  • Esters (1.5-2%): bornyl acetates (0.75%).
  • Coumarines (2%).

Safety data

Both root and seed oil are non-toxic and non-irritating.  However, angelica oil should not be used during pregnancy or by diabetics.
