About Melaleuca alternifolia oil:

Melaleuca alternifolia oil was the proverbial "snake oil" of the old west. 

However, unlike the meaning we associate with the term today, during the California gold rush, "snake oil" was good thing.  It was used effectively for snake bites (hence, its name), but also had a wide range of other uses.  It was imported from Australia in large quantities to sell to pioneers, trappers and the miners of the California gold rush.

The meaning we attach to the term "snake oil" today comes from much the same situation we have today with fake pharmaceuticals over the Internet.  Because of the effectiveness of the product in the minds of the people, charlatans came up with counterfeits to market, using the same "it cures everything" claims that had been found to be largely true with the real Melaleuca alternifolia.
