There are many essential oils companies in the marketplace today claiming to have therapeutic-grade oils, yet the quality of oils available is generally quite low. I've tried oils from some of the leading companies, and I've always been disappointed — to be kind.
- Many of the oils making this claim to quality still have a perceptible chemical smell.
- Others have smelled wonderful, but had an oily, chemical feel to them.
- Others (even some that were certified as organic) have had a petro-chemical "buzz" to them (which is very different from the shimmery feel of the frequency of a truly therapeutic-grade essential oil).
Given this disparity between the claims and the reality, how can you be sure that the oils you buy are truly therapeutic-grade?
Indicators of therapeutic-grade essential oils
When considering the purchase of an essential oil for anything other than recreational fragrancing, here are some important questions to ask, to be sure that your essential oils are truly therapeutic-grade:
- Are the fragrances subtle, rich, organic and delicate? Or, do you get a scent of chemical adulteration?
- Do the oils "feel" natural? Or, do they have a "produced" feeling?
- Do the fragrances of your oils vary from batch-to-batch, as an indication that they're pure, and painstakingly distilled in small batches? Or, do they always smell exactly the same, suggesting that they're industrially processed on a large scale, or "doctored" with sythetic chemicals to adjust their scent?
- Does your supplier send each batch of essential oils through a variety of chemical analyses before the oil is released?
- Are these tests performed by independent labs, equipped to test for the complexity of natural, essential oils — instead of synthetic chemicals?
- Does your supplier organically grow its own herbs on farmland that is not contaminated from other sources, and irrigated with pure water, rather than with municipally-treated water or run-off from contaminated sources?
- Does your supplier distill its own organically-grown herbs in facilities that are part of the farm, so that the herbs can be distilled while still fresh and uncontaminated, to maintain the purity and potency of the oil?
- Does your supplier use a low-pressure and low-temperature distillation method to preserve the fragile chemical constituents of the oils?
- Does your supplier distill its oils in cookers that are fabricated from costly stainless-steal alloys, to reduce the likelihood of the oils chemically reacting with the metal?
- Does your supplier have knowledgeable representatives traveling around the world to personally inspect fields and distilleries where the herbs are grown and distilled?
- Do these representatives scrutinize the facilities to check that no synthetic chemicals are being used in any of the processes?
If you answer to all of these questions is "Yes", then you can feel confident that your oils are therapeutic-grade, the purest available. If you're not able to determine the answers to these questions about your oils, you can be assured that Young Living Essential Oils meets all of these requirements.
