Depicting three lighted candles, The Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us is an 11" X 14" pen & ink drawing, accented with calligraphy of the Bible text of John 1:4, 14 ("In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. …  And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory").

Addressing, in the narrow view, the heart of the Christmas message, in the wider view, it touches the heart of what it means to be a Christian.  The message that it presents is truly awesome.

The Word who became flesh and dwelt among us

John, the apostle, writes (John 1:1-4):

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came into being by Him,
and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
In Him was life,
and the life was the light of men.

In the Word was life.  In that life was the light of men.  And, from what John wrote elsewhere, it would seem appropriate to understand this life to be the Holy Spirit.  (He is, after all, the One who leads the sons of God — Romans 8:14.)  This Word, with the Holy Spirit within Him, became flesh and dwelt among us.  We know Him as Jesus.  And, in Him, we beheld the glory of God.  God with us: the heart of the Christmas message.

But, it does not end there.  In Ephesians 1:18, Paul wrote of "the glory of His inheritance in the saints".  And together, as His body, believers make up "the fulness of Him who fills all in all" (Ephesians 1:23).  That life, which is the Holy Spirit and the light of men, that comprised the glory in Christ that we beheld, is given to those who believe, that we might share that glory.  May the Lord give us "a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. …  that the eyes of [our] hearts may be enlightened" (Ephesians 1:17-18) to grasp — and participate in —this wonderful truth.
