As the Deer Pants for the Water
Fine art poster reproduction, with Bible text calligraphy of Psalm 42:1
Depicting a fallow deer, standing beside a cascading mountain stream in a forest, As the Deer Longs for the Water is an 18" X 24" fine art pencil drawing, accented in ink, with ink calligraphy of the Bible text Psalm 42:1 ("As the deer longs for the water brooks, so my soul longs for Thee, O God").
While the Bible text of Psalm 42:1 speaks of the longing of the heart to know the Lord in the depths, the serenity of the scene bespeaks the peace and joy of experiencing the Lord in this way.
Longing and hope in the face of adversity
The Psalmist wrote this scripture text from a heart that was broken — sunk down with despair within him. Though he could remember a time when he would lead the throngs up to the Temple for worship, to appear before God, all he could do now was to lift up his heart to the Lord from afar.
The cry of his heart was to appear before the Lord; but, instead, he suffered the oppression of his enemies. His longing was to worship in the Temple; but, instead, he was reviled by his adversaries, who called out in apparent victory over him, "Where is your God?"
Nearly destroyed and overwhelmed with trouble, he cried out to God, "Why have You forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?" But, he caught himself. He remembered again Whom he had gone up to the Temple to worship. And so he said:
Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Wait for God,
For I shall still praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God. …The Lord will command His loveingkindness in the daytime;
And His song will be with me in the night,
A prayer to the God of my life (Psalm 42:5, 8).
